Winter Workout Routine in London: Beat the Dark Months

Winter Workout Routine in London: Beat the Dark Months

Share

How to build a winter workout routine in London that survives sunsets before 5pm and cold commutes: booked slots, a 6:20am circuit and indoor runs.

UK clocks go back an hour at 2am on the last Sunday of October, which in 2026 is Sunday 25 October. Overnight, the after-work session starts in the dark, and by late November the sun has set before 4pm.

Nothing about your fitness changes that weekend. The light and the logistics do. This guide builds a winter week at Rumble Dalston and Rumble Fitzrovia that still happens when it’s dark by five, with fixed slots, an early circuit, an indoor run and a warm room for the coldest days.

What changes when the clocks go back in October

When the clocks go back, sunrise comes an hour earlier and sunset an hour sooner, and the evenings keep drawing in until mid-December. These are the approximate sunrise and sunset times in central London this winter, rounded to the minute (times from sunrise-sunset.org; the date of the change is from gov.uk):

Saturday 24 OctoberSunrise 7:40am, sunset 5:49pm. The last day of British Summer Time.
Monday 26 OctoberSunrise 6:44am, sunset 4:45pm. The first working day on Greenwich Mean Time.
Sunday 22 NovemberSunrise 7:30am, sunset 4:03pm. Sunset drops below 4pm a few days later.
12 and 13 DecemberSunset 3:51pm. The earliest sunsets of the year.
Monday 21 DecemberSunrise 8:04am, sunset 3:54pm. The shortest day.

So plan the week around the light you have, rather than waiting to feel like training. Winter routines tend to fail on logistics: the session that needs you to go home, change and head back out into the dark is the one that doesn’t happen.

Build a winter workout routine on booked slots, not motivation

A winter workout routine survives on decisions made in advance. Pick two or three anchor sessions a week and book them like meetings as soon as you know your week, on the live timetable or in the Rumble app. Once the slot is in the diary, a dark evening stops being a debate.

The Re.HIIT circuit makes this easier than a fixed class time, because a new 40-minute circuit starts every 10 minutes. Pick the start that leaves a margin after your train or your last meeting, and arrive at least 10 minutes before it, as our first-class FAQ asks.

How much is enough? The UK Chief Medical Officers’ physical activity guidelines (2019, updated in July 2026) ask adults to build up at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity, or a combination of both, and to do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days a week. Any activity is better than none. Three 40-minute circuits give you 120 minutes before you count the walk to the studio, and two of them can be Build days, which put the emphasis on strength.

Before work: the 6:20am circuit

The first circuit starts at 6:20am on weekdays, and it’s the one slot nothing later in the day can push out. It’s 40 minutes of work plus a warm-up, so you’re done soon after 7am and at your desk with the session behind you.

For roughly the first week or two after the clocks change, you walk out after sunrise. The walk in is still in twilight, and from mid-November you walk out before sunrise too, but by then the habit is doing the work.

Make it easy on yourself: pack the bag the night before and shower at the studio, where towels and Cowshed products are provided. Monday’s circuit is a Build day with an upper-body focus, a good way to start the week.

Lunch or after work: train before you get home

The key to a winter gym routine on a working day is to train on the way home, not after you get there. Once sunset is around 4:45pm, and before 4pm from late November, going home first is where the evening session dies.

Rumble Fitzrovia, at 101-105 New Cavendish Street in W1W, is a short walk from Great Portland Street and Warren Street, and around ten minutes on foot from Oxford Circus. It’s built around the Re.HIIT circuit and one-to-one personal training.

Rumble Dalston, on Dalston Square in E8, is a couple of minutes from Dalston Junction and runs the circuit alongside Re.Run, Reformer Pilates, spin, barre, yoga and mat Pilates, including heated yoga and Pilates classes. Circuits run into the evening at both studios, and the circuit timetable shows the last start of each day.

Midday is the lightest part of a winter working day, and a lunchtime circuit fits a long lunch break. If you’re new to Rumble, the £45 Discover offer (new clients only) lets you try it, and Re.HIIT Unlimited at £119 a month covers it every week. If your day lets you train late morning or mid-afternoon instead, the £49 Off-Peak plan at Fitzrovia covers those quieter hours, and our guide to off-peak training explains how it works.

Move the hard midweek run indoors to Re.Run

Winter weather cancels the hard midweek run first, so move that session indoors and keep the easy miles outside. At Dalston, Re.Run is 45 minutes of programmed running intervals on motorised Woodway treadmills that can be set to an incline, with strength work at the Fitbench between blocks, and you choose your own speed.

As of late October 2026, Re.Run runs at 6:40am and 7:40am every weekday, at 12:30pm on Wednesdays and Fridays, after work at 6:20pm on Mondays and 6:15pm on Wednesdays, and on Saturday mornings. You can see this week’s Re.Run times on the class page, and our treadmill vs outdoor running guide explains the split in more detail.

Keep one run outside, ideally in company. Rumble Run Club is a social 30-minute group run from Rumble Dalston, led by a Rumble crew member, and it keeps going through the dark months. Dress for the weather, and the showers are waiting when you get back. If you run alone after dark, stick to lit routes and wear something reflective.

If you want Re.Run every week, Re.HIIT + 2nd Studio at £159 a month adds it to the circuit, with unlimited circuits at both studios plus unlimited Re.Run classes.

Warm rooms for cold days: heated yoga and Pilates

On the coldest days, a warm room is the easiest session to turn up for. Dalston’s Mind & Body studio is heated to 28–30°C for Hot Yoga and Hot Pilates, not Bikram, and sessions run 45 to 60 minutes, with mats, props and sweat towels provided. The timetable for heated yoga and Pilates at Dalston is on the class page, and if you choose Mind & Body as your £159 second studio, it covers every class in that room.

Stay accountable: coaches, classmates and personal training

In winter, the best motivator is someone expecting you. On the Re.HIIT circuit, screens demonstrate every move, including the warm-up, a trainer on the floor adapts each station to you, and the programme changes every day, which makes it pretty much PT on demand for a fraction of the price. It’s open to all levels.

Bring someone with you. If a friend is new to Rumble, the Discover offer gives them three classes of their choice for £45, so you can book the same slots. All our classes are mixed. Rumble is woman-owned, and around 80% of our clients are women.

If you need a fixed appointment, book personal training, with one-to-one, 60-minute sessions at both studios and no membership needed. A single session is £79, or £699 for a 10-pack, which is under £70 a session, and you can start with a free consultation call. Our guide to personal trainer costs in London compares the options.

Winter workout routine in London: two sample weeks

Here are two example winter workout plans, one on the circuit alone and one with a treadmill class added. Treat them as a starting point, not a prescription.

Week A: circuits only, on Re.HIIT Unlimited at £119 a month, valid at both studios:

MondayBefore work. The 6:20am circuit, a Build day with an upper-body focus.
WednesdayAt lunchtime or after work. A circuit near the office, at Fitzrovia for the West End or Dalston in the east. Wednesday is Build, abs and glutes.
SaturdayThe weekend circuit. Build, full body, at whichever start suits your day.

Week B: add a treadmill class, on Re.HIIT + 2nd Studio at £159 a month with Re.Run as your second studio:

MondayBefore work. The 6:20am circuit.
WednesdayTreadmill class after work. Re.Run at Dalston in place of the dark midweek run.
FridayAt lunchtime. A circuit to end the working week, Burn, full body.
WeekendAn easy run outdoors. Thirty minutes in daylight, ideally with a friend.

Week A adds up to two hours of training and Week B to about two and a half, before you count the walking, and both include muscle strengthening work on at least two days, as the guidelines ask. For unlimited Re.Run and heated classes in the same week, All Unlimited at £199 a month covers both, or you can choose Mind & Body as your £159 second studio instead of Re.Run. Not sure which suits you? If you’re new to Rumble, try a circuit, a Re.Run class and a heated class on the Discover offer first.

Winter workout routine in London: quick answers

How do I stay motivated in winter?Take the decision out of the day. Book two or three fixed slots before the week starts, train on your way home rather than going home first, and bring company, whether that’s a coached class, a training partner or Rumble Run Club.
What time is the first circuit?6:20am on weekdays. After that, a new 40-minute Re.HIIT circuit starts every 10 minutes at Dalston and Fitzrovia, and the live timetable shows the evening and weekend starts.
Can I just turn up?Book first, then arrive early. Reserve your start on the website or in the Rumble app, and get there at least 10 minutes before it begins.
Should I stop running outside? No, just move the hard sessions indoors. Programmed intervals suit Re.Run treadmill classes at Dalston. Keep the easy miles outside, ideally in company, such as Rumble Run Club’s 30-minute group run.
How much exercise do I need a week?Follow the UK Chief Medical Officers’ guidelines. Adults should build up at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity, or a combination, and do muscle strengthening activities on at least two days a week. Any activity is better than none.
Why is training harder in winter?Mostly light and logistics. After the clocks go back, sunset is around 4:45pm and falls below 4pm in late November, so the after-work session starts in the dark and home feels closer than the gym. Fix the logistics and the routine follows. If it feels like more than the dark evenings, the NHS advises seeing a GP if “you think you might have seasonal affective disorder (SAD)”, and its SAD page explains more.
How do I start at Rumble? With the £45 Discover offer. It’s three classes of your choice for new clients only, booked within one month of purchase, at either studio. After that, unlimited monthly memberships start from £49, and every option is on the memberships page.
